BrANCH, the Association of British American Nineteenth Century Historians, was established in 1993 in order to promote the study in Britain of the history of the United States between 1789 and 1917. Membership is open to anyone with a scholarly interest in this period of American history.
BrANCH promotes its aims in the following ways:
- Conferences: an annual weekend conference is held in September or October. Our next annual conference is due to be held in 2022 at the University of Leicester. We are also due to meet at BrANCH Missouri, 7-9 April 2022. In 2023, we will be meeting at Oxford, 22-24 September.
- A scholarly journal: American Nineteenth Century History, one of the leading titles in the field, available at a discount to members.
- Grants to UK-based graduate students studying nineteenth century American history from the Peter J. Parish Memorial Fund.
- Two prizes are awarded annually to UK-based graduate/ undergraduate students for outstanding dissertations and coursework: the Parish Dissertation Prize and the Harriet Tubman Prize.
